Once on the island of Alonissos you will find that public transport is non-existent for most of the year. This includes Easter which is a very popular time to visit Alonissos. Hire a car or use a taxi, basically that's it. During the summer months when the schools are on holiday the school bus provides a regular service between Patitiri and the Old Town. There is also a service to Steni Vala. There are a few taxis on the island that can be found at a taxi rank near the Alkyon Hotel. We suggest when you use one of the taxis get a business card so you always have a number to call. This is important during the winter months because you will need to phone for a taxi.
There are cars to hire on the island and we recommend hiring a car, even for a day, because being a small island you can see a lot in a very small space of time.
One other very rewarding form of transport is Shank's Pony. It is also the cheapest, and by far the healthiest mode of transport on the island. You can walk the donkey track to the Old Town which takes you through some lovely countryside and should you need a breather there are seats along the track.
